Marble Canyon

A mere 30 minutes from Banff is a prime example of erosion at work. That is the theme at this reasonable 1.8 km hike tracking part of the Kootenay River as it has has carved a canyon through the limestone. While Takakkaw Falls holds bragging rights for the second highest waterfall in Canada, Marble Canyon offers tangible evidence of canyon building at work.

Despite a short (50m) steeper section at the beginning, the hike itself is a gentle climb towards the last set of falls. Along the way you are rewarded with views of the canyon, afforded by several bridges across the river. Parks Canada has done a remarkable job of documenting the progression of the canyon across each crossing describing when this particular section of the river was carved.

Marble canyon is located in Kootenay National Park, which is in British Columbia. There is ample parking and facilities at the trail head. You will need your own food and water, but this is a short hike, so this should not be an issue. You will need a park pass, available through Parks Canada.
