Mistaya Canyon

Raging Waters, Sculpted Canyons and Soaring Mountain Vista’s

This amazing spot is just a short hike from the parking lot off of the Icefields Parkway. An added bonus, and unlike some other popular stops along the Parkway, is that Mistaya is far less crowded. There are facilities located at the ample parking lot.

The parking area and trail head are located about 50 minutes (74 km) from Lake Louise. The trail itself is rough gravel. After about 500 downhill meters from the parking lot, you will cross a bridge over the Mistaya River. Take some time to appreciate the erosion through the solid rock. Carving the canyon with water power alone. From the bridge it is a short walk to various view points along the river. There are incredible river views of the river with Mount Sarbach dominating the background. To extend your hike, take the 1km loop. It starts from the river crossing and follows a gentle path up the valley wall.

Photography

From the river crossing and looking upstream, you will be facing South to South East. Essentially shooting straight into the overhead Sun, making for some pretty harsh lighting. I would recommend shooting during Golden Hour during either Sunrise or Sunset. Both will work well to illuminate the valley and mountains from the side.

Safety

I bring this up because I have seen so many people trying to get their Instagram or Tik-Tok fix. Standing on the edge of the canyon, inches from the raging water below. One misstep and bang, they are in the river never to be seen again.
