Wedge Pond Has it All

A Classic Rocky Mountain Photo Location

So if you are looking for that classic and iconic Rocky Mountain shot, there is no better location than Wedge Pond, in Kananaskis County. But be warned you may need to revisit this location several times to get the best conditions.

Wedge Pond is in Kananaskis County State Park, which is located south and west of Banff National Park. The Alberta government wanted to keep this area as natural as possible, so there is very little development in the park itself, adding to it’s raw beauty. For more about Kananaskis, check out my previous post here. Wedge pond is 30kms from Hwy 1 (the Trans Canada Hwy), the main highway you take as you drive from Calgary towards Canmore.

Wedge Pond features plenty of parking and facilities and once you arrive you will want to head towards the eastern shore of the pond. Mount Kidd will be looming on the other side of the pond, catching the early suns rays as they peak over the horizon.

My First Visit

Wedge Pond in Less Than Ideal Conditions

My first visit to Wedge Pond was not the greatest. This was during my first ever visit to the Canadian Rockies and I was super excited for the upcoming photo opportunities. It was late June and a cold weather system passed through over night. The morning temperature was below freezing, the wind was blasting in from the north, and it started snowing. Undeterred I headed out before a very early sunrise (it being right around the summer Solstice) hoping for some sunrise shots. This photo above illustrates the conditions I was met with – grey skies, very windy and no light what so ever!

The Classic Shot

Regardless of my first experience, Wedge Pond has all of the elements of a classic Rocky Mountain shot, if you get the timing and conditions right. You may need to visit this location several times, but eventually the light, colors and sunrise will work in your favor.

Sunrise: First of all this is a sunrise location. From the eastern shore of the pond (that being furthest from the highway), Mount Kidd rises in the west meaning it will be catching the early morning sun.

Fall: Fall is definitely the best time to visit Wedge Pond, as the Aspens on the shores of the lake will be changing color. Every year is different but late September to early October will work best. The shots below were at the end of the first week of October.

Composition: Most of the views from the eastern shore of the pond will be the same. The shores of the pond (which is artificial) offer little in the way of interesting foregrounds, so there are few compositional elements to select in your position. The focus will be on Mount Kidd in the background, the Aspens in the mid ground, and the reflections in the lake.

Photography Tips

  • Lens Selection: Carry both a wide‑angle lens and a moderate telephoto (up to ~120mm) to capture sweeping vistas as well as tighter details. I even used my super telephoto 100-400 to shoot the Aspens on the other side of the lake.
  • Tripod Advice: Essential for sunrise, sunset, and low‑light conditions.
  • Polarizer Use: Highly recommended to enhance vegetation colors and manage reflections off of the water.
  • Patience: Don’t just snap the first picture and leave, especially if the conditions are dynamic. Wait around and watch the light and clouds change. You will be surprised in post-processing what your favorite shot will be.
  • Watch the Weather: During the fall it will be cold before sunrise (the coldest part of the day). So plan on slightly below freezing during a typical fall.
  • Bring Bear Spray: So I can’t emphasize this enough, it is especially true for locations in Kananaskis Country, there are bears. Bring bear spray and know how to use it.

Nearby Destinations

Bow Lake and Mistaya Canyon

Extend your adventure by exploring nearby gems:

  • Marble Canyon: Not more than an hour from the town of Banff, Marble Canyon has great views, and an education on glacial erosion to boot. Highly recommended.
  • Johnston Canyon: Located half an hour north of Banff, Johnston Canyon is a very popular destination, and with good reason. Just get there early to avoid the crowds.

Have you been to any of these locations? Was this post helpful and useful? I would love to hear your comments and feedback.
