Florida – Sun Destination
I have a love/hate relationship with Florida. In the middle of a morbidly dark and cold Canadian winter, the feeling of hot, humid, thick air over your body is unbeatable. The sun is actually in the sky, warming your skin and generating much needed Vitamin D. Donning shorts and a T-Shirt instead of three layers of insulation is just the right reprieve from the weather we have in the North East,. Okay so that is what I love, what I hate is that this is not a “vacation” destination. What I mean is that it is the same old, same old that I left at home. Nothing challenging, nothing new, no great vistas, no volcanoes, no mountains; it is like the familiar suburban landscape that I left at home. But it has it’s charms like family reunions and a different familiarity, and there is that weather. The challenge then for a novice landscape photographer – where are those spectacular pictures? So I guess the challenge is to find that charm, that uniqueness and capture that in the epic Florida photo.
So here we go – Florida in all it’s glory.
The Beaches
What else but beaches – a major charm and attraction. If nothing else Florida has beaches. Warm waters, mostly calm surf and endless sand. Here we are exploring the beaches at sunrise.

Sometimes you are in the right place at the right time. I was at a wedding, keeping an eye on the weather outside which was quite dramatic. At one point, I just had to go and visit the beach. I didn’t have my main camera, so I whipped out the cell phone and Voila! Drama. I didn’t even notice the row of seagulls until post-processing. Bonus!
Da Boids
The same weather that attracts humans, is also the attraction for thousands of bird species. So when there are no mountain vistas, let’s change the focus.
Tourism
There is no doubt, Florida is a tourist destination, not only from North America but from around the world. Beaches, warm weather and of course theme parks like Disney, Universal and countless others. In addition to all that fantasy is the very real world of space exploration – and of course the Kennedy space center.

Fantastic pictures – I really love the shot of the Lunar module at KSC. Also the jelly fish – how did you take that?

Well it wasn’t easy, as the surf was pouring in on each shot. I had to get the timing right without completely soaking my camera gear. This shot is good, but it is not great. It is a little out of focus, and I would have preferred the surf to be very close to the fish to enhance the story. But this is really the only shot that was in acceptable focus. Thanks for asking and yes, I really like the shots from KSC as well.
